IWC Ingenieur at 50: From Gérald Genta to Today

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining IWC Schaffhausen in Dubai for “Ingenieur: Form und Technik,” an evening celebrating 50 years of one of the brand’s most distinctive designs.

Watches, design and music came together for the occasion, but the real focus of the evening was the story of a watch that was perhaps ahead of its time: the IWC Ingenieur SL, designed by Gérald Genta in 1976.

An Icon That Took Its Time

The Ingenieur story actually began in the 1950s, when IWC created the collection as a robust watch designed with protection against magnetic fields.

But it was in 1976 that the Ingenieur gained the design language we recognize today. Gérald Genta reimagined it as the Ingenieur SL Reference 1832, introducing an integrated steel bracelet, a round bezel with five distinctive recesses and a strong, industrial aesthetic.

Interestingly, it wasn’t an immediate success. IWC says only 598 pieces of the Reference 1832 were produced and sold between 1976 and 1983. Over time, however, collectors rediscovered the watch and its importance within Genta’s work.

Fifty years later, the design feels remarkably current.

The Ingenieur at 50

To celebrate the anniversary, IWC has introduced two limited editions: the Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary and, perhaps most interestingly for us, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary.

Both come in stainless steel with beautiful brushed silver-plated dials inspired by a rare version of the original Ingenieur SL. Each size is limited to 1,150 pieces.

The 35 mm particularly caught my attention. The Ingenieur has such a strong design that it doesn’t need a large case to have presence. At 35 mm, it keeps that distinctive integrated-bracelet look while feeling elegant and very wearable on a smaller wrist.

Form und Technik in Dubai

The Dubai celebration brought the story to life beyond the watches themselves. Historical references, contemporary Ingenieur models, music and DJ sets created an evening around the idea of form and engineering, two elements that have defined the collection for five decades.

Seeing the original Genta design alongside today’s Ingenieur also shows how much of its identity has remained intact: the integrated bracelet, the bezel, the industrial details and the idea of the watch as one continuous design.

Fifty years on, the Ingenieur is a good reminder that not every icon is recognized immediately.
